Kia ora, I've purchased a few packets of the diffraction glasses now, as I keep giving them away to the kids! These glasses are a personal favourite of mine. I am a Science Communicator, and the glasses are a great and easy way to begin a conversation about light and wavelengths, and they impress people young and old.
I have just run an 'Edible Science' workshop, where I used large diffraction grating sheets to make Diffraction Chocolate, and then gave the kids a pair of diffraction glasses each to explore more about the make up of light, before going on to use UV lights and glow in the dark jello to talk about different wavelengths of light.

While teaching third grade, a number of years ago, I would give my students these every Christmas. We would walk out into the hall – they weren’t allowed to look through them until we were outside in the hall, and then the countdown began. When I said three, two, one, put your glasses on—- the whole hallway, was filled with oohs and ashes! They love them. The superintendent of the schools happened to be in the hallway while we were still out there so we had to give him a pair of glasses so that he could experience it as well.
I now live in a retirement community. They had never seen these before, so I’m having a great deal of fun watching their reactions. Oh, and , of course, their reactions are pretty much the same of the children! They are amazed. Tonight we are going on a bus tour to see Christmas lights at Shadrach‘s Christmas festival. It’s a 2 mile drive through all kinds of lights with music synchronized to the lights as they change through the cars or buses radio. I can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction when they see the lights through the glasses . We just love them!
These were purchased for our non-profit to demonstrate the color difference of various artificial lights. It sort of works for this, but does illustrate the color spectrum well overall. To distinguish the color differences between two different light sources, you need a pretty dark room. It's difficult to do in a brightly lit conference room.
These glasses work great for our Night Watchman Ghost Tour in St. Augustine. Our guests get a free pair when they purchase the tour. We have found many of them using the glasses the next day as well. Our next order will be branded with custom printing.
